2019 KRESGE EMINENT ARTIST CELEBRATION
HONORING DR. GLORIA HOUSE

Friday March 29, 2019, 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History

OVERVIEW

Kresge Arts in Detroit, a program of the Kresge Foundation, will host a celebration of the career and works of Detroit-based poet, essayist, human rights advocate and educator Dr. Gloria House.  House was named the 11th Kresge Eminent Artist in January 2019, and she will be honored at the event by The Kresge Foundation President and CEO Rip Rapson and College for Creative Studies President Richard Rogers.  The program will feature a short film on House’s career, plus live performances of her selected works. The program will be preceded and followed by an opening reception and afterglow.

ABOUT THE AWARD

House is the 11th artist to receive the lifetime achievement award, which includes a $50,000 no-strings-attached prize. The honor recognizes an individual’s distinguished record of high-quality work and professional achievement in the arts, significant impact on their chosen art form, and generous contribution to the growth and vibrancy of Detroit’s cultural environment

In its first 10 years (2009 – 2018), Kresge Arts in Detroit contributed over $5 million to local artists, no-strings-attached, through 200 awards. These included 10 Kresge Eminent Artist Awards of $50,000 each, 180 Kresge Artist Fellowships of $25,000 each, and 10 Gilda Awards of $5,000 each.
