For the third year in a row, Detroit Metro Times and Kresge Arts in Detroit have coordinated to spotlight Detroit artists, including many who have received Kresge Eminent Artist Awards, Kresge Artist Fellowships, or Gilda Awards.
This year’s issue showcases 20 established and exciting up-and-coming writers, poets, and visual artists creating work around the theme of “conjuring future visions.” The theme provides space for speculative considerations of what’s to come. Contributions include visual art, a fable, a sonnet, a sermon, and a meditation, all of which imagine distinct futures occupying the bleak, bright, and unknown.
“For the first two years, the writing was very much in deep reflection on the loss and disruption of the pandemic,” says editor and 2019 Kresge Artist Fellow Nandi Comer, “This year as the world adapts to the new reality, this issue is a reflection of our community’s resilience and our ability to imagine a future that is innovative, healing, and resourceful.”
