NOW:FUTURE ARTIST SUMMIT
Unpacking Mutual Aid and Alternative Economies for Detroit Artists
Kresge Arts in Detroit and Sidewalk Detroit have partnered to present a follow up to the 2020 Now:Future virtual performance series. The companion event is a public, 3-day, interactive summit that will explore existing opportunities and new possibilities related to alternative economies and community-based resource creation and sharing within Detroit’s artist community.
Participants will engage with presenters and peers with knowledge and experience spanning mutual aid, intentional communities and land use. Attendees will also have opportunities to define and share their vision, ideas, and experience, while connecting and learning from other artists who are interested in alternative economies.
The summit is free and open to the public, but space is limited.

June 15
Illuminating Mutual Aid Systems in Detroit / 10:30AM-12:30PM
This session begins with a panel composed of Detroit-based artists who are participating in, or leading different types of mutual aid networks in Detroit. Following the panel will be a breakout session in which attendees can ask questions and ideate the state of, and need for mutual aid in Detroit. Panelists are invited to participate in break-out sessions.
A World Beyond Philanthropy / 1:30-3:00PM
This 2-part workshop will walk artists through the process of discovering and creating mutual aid pods and community power-mapping towards collective goals. A pod is a community of individuals that you can turn to for mutual aid, care, or support. A power map is a tool used for discovery to identify individuals and organizations that can be targeted to advance progressive changes for the Detroit creative community.

This session is a moderated visionary discussion with subject matter scholars about the possibilities of an art world that is not dependent on philanthropy and shifts our creative output away from capitalism.
