Halima Afi Cassells

Halima Afi Cassells (b. 1981) is an award-winning interdisciplinary community-engaged artist, gardener, and mom currently working in her hometown of Detroit. Born into a creative family, her parents photographed her unsolicited murals and fashions as a kid. Community is at the heart of her work. After a decade of creating murals, she credits gardening as inspiring her move away from painting into a practice using materials and processes that foster the thriving of human and non-human communities. In addition to Detroit, her work has been featured in New York, Oakland, Berlin, Copenhagen, Bogota, and Harare.
